This Forum is organised by The University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Institute for Climate-Smart and Resilient Development (GICSRD), the virtual platform for harnessing the expertise of The UWI on issues related to climate, resilience, sustainable development and disaster risk reduction for increased coordinated response, resource mobilization and impact.
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The first COP meeting was held 1995, and we need to ask the question 28 years later, if COP has been beneficial to the countries and communities that are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Perspectives will be shared from academics, government officials, non-governmental organisations and other key stakeholders from both the Caribbean and Canada.
The impacts of climate change are already on our doorstep, from wildfires in Canada to extreme weather events and high temperatures in the Caribbean.
In preparation for COP 28 (see the UNFCCC website, UN Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week 2023 , A Climate-Resilient Future for All Canadians and CARICOM: Climate Change for more information) which will commence on Thursday 30th November, 2023, this forum seeks to raise the profile of institutions that are working to build more resilient communities and garner support for future impactful interventions.
Beyond the Forum, next steps would be to see how Canada can continue to collaborate and support building resilience in Caribbean Communities including sharing lessons learned to improve coordination and collaboration as well as mobilisation of resources to drive impact in communities.
