Universities Studying Slavery conference in Halifax demands that government follow CARICOM’s lead on reparations.
The four-day Universities Studying Slavery conference, held October 18-21 in Halifax, adopted a resolution calling for Canada to join the Caribbean Community and the Political and Economic Union of the Common Market (CARICOM). to ensure reparative justice.
The decision was made by Dr. Sylvia D. Hamilton, filmmaker, author and Inglis Professor Emeritus at the University of King’s College, suggested; and representatives of the Global Afrikan Congress, including its chair Cikiah Thomas. It was unanimously adopted on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the closing session of the conference at the Black Cultural Center Nova Scotia at Cherry Brook. This call to action requires widespread attention to bring the Government of Canada to the table to implement reparative justice, consistent with the work already done by the CARICOM Reparations Commission.
Delegates and conference participants reiterated a second call that dispelled the myth that reparations are checks for individuals – reparative justice is about comprehensive development for those whose development has been stolen from them…
