Haiti: What next in 2024? Join us on February 7th, 2024 (12:00 pm – 1:30 pm) for a Panel Discussion

Despite the approval of important resolutions by the UN Security Council in October 2023, the situation in Haiti remains bleak.

Thanks to a collaboration between the Canadian International Council (National Capital Branch Study Group on Latin America and the Caribbean) and the Canada-Caribbean Institute, we are pleased to be holding a virtual panel discussion to discuss the current situation in Haiti.

The February 7th, 2024 discussion will feature remarks from Jacky Lumarque, President, Université de Quisqueya; Youdeline Cherizard, Deputy Secretary-General, Federation of Bar Associations of Haiti; and Henri-Paul Normandin: Fellow, Université de Québec à Montréal and ex-Ambassador of Canada to Haiti. Each of these panelists brings deep experience and understanding of Haiti.

The event will be moderated by Stephen Baranyi, Professor, University of Ottawa; and Robert Ready, Director, Canadian International Council and Director Canada-Caribbean Institute.

The discussion will focus on the following questions:

  • Are the reinforcement of the National Police and its efforts to counter gang violence improving security on the ground?
  • What can we expect from the deployment of the Multilateral Security Support Mission mandated by the UN Security Council?
  • What impact are the UN-mandated sanctions against gang leaders and personalities accused of collusion with them having in Haiti?
  • What is the status of dialogue between the de facto government and the opposition?
  • What are the prospects for a transition agreement leading to the election of a legitimate government?

The panel will take place in English and French.
