McMaster’s President and Vice-Chancellor, David Farrar, has advised the Board of Governors he will conclude his tenure when his five-year term ends on June 30, 2025. Farrar is announcing his plans now in accordance with McMaster’s practice that a sitting president provide 18 months’ notice of whether they intend to seek reappointment, and to allow ample time to undertake a presidential search.

“After more than 40 years in universities, 25 of those in leadership roles, the time is right for me to return to my roots as a researcher, and for McMaster to begin the transition to a new leader,” says Farrar.

“I look forward to working with the McMaster community over the next 18 months as we continue to move the university forward together.”

After joining McMaster in 2017 as provost and vice-president (Academic), Farrar stepped into the role of acting president in July 2019, and was formally appointed McMaster’s eighth president and vice-chancellor in December 2019.
