Guyana and Jamaica have recently held national elections.
In the past both countries have experienced serious issues related to their electoral processes. Guyana has seen ethnic divisions spill over into deadly clashes between Indo-Guyanese and Afro-Guyanese elements. Jamaica’s experience with party-aligned gang garrison communities resulted in deadly turf wars in the past.
It is a sign of a maturing political culture in both countries that recent elections have been largely without incident and accepted as fair by observers.
