The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in collaboration with the High Commission of Canada, recently hosted the Cybersecurity Resilience through Policy, Best Practices and Capacity Building Seminar.
This seminar, made possible by the High Commission of Canada through the Cybersecurity Resilience Fund, aimed to address challenges in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. The increase in cyber threats have become more sophisticated, and damaging to both public and private sector organisations. Cyberattacks, data breaches, and ransomware incidents have led to significant financial losses, reputational damage and even national security concerns.
Speaking at the event was Senator Professor the Honourable Prakash Persad, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, who praised the University for this timely seminar, noting that cyber-attacks have become more advanced with the increased use in technology. He emphasised, “We must embrace holistic governance and collective responsibility within government ministries, academia, private sectors and civil society”.
His Excellency Michael Ryan Callan, Canadian High Commissioner, highlighted, “Cybersecurity should be a fundamental building block of our country’s national security, economic security and public safety, safeguarding both our democracy and our livelihoods”.
Also in attendance was Professor Selwyn Cudjoe, Chairman of the Board of Governors, UTT who reminded attendees that cybersecurity is not a technical issue but one of national importance, economic stability and public trust.
Through initiatives such as these, UTT is committed to addressing the nation’s cybersecurity needs, by fostering awareness, building technical capacity and strengthening resilience. The University thanks the High Commission of Canada for its support and looks forward to continued collaboration that safeguards our nation’s digital future.
