President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s address at the Maple Leaf Gala held on May 8th in Toronto was a call for deeper Guyana–Canada partnership built on shared values, mutual respect, and a vision of inclusive prosperity.
His remarks (available on video below) were appreciative of the Guyanese diaspora in Canada, and Canadian partners, for supporting the country. He stressed that Guyana’s development is rooted in collective effort rather than political division.
He emphasized that Guyana’s rapid economic transformation is not accidental but the result of deliberate policies focused on stability, transparency, and long‑term planning.
According to Pres. Ali, the major national priorities are food security, energy security, climate resilience, and human‑capital development. He underlined that Guyana is positioning itself as a regional leader in sustainable agriculture and low‑carbon development, noting that the country’s forest assets and climate commitments remain central to its identity even as the oil sector expands. He urged Canadian investors to engage not only in extractive industries but in technology, manufacturing, logistics, and value‑added production.
The President framed Guyana’s growth as an opportunity for all Guyanese — at home and abroad — and called on the diaspora to participate in building a modern, diversified economy.
