Belize Policy Research Institute at the University of Belize launched its landmark report, Money in Belizean Politics: Breaking the Regulation Deadlock

BELPRI-UB LAUNCHES REPORT ON MONEY IN BELIZEAN POLITICS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BELIZE CITY, Belize, 28 July 2026

The Belize Policy Research Institute at the University of Belize (BELPRI-UB) today , at the Belize City House of Culture.

Produced in-house by BELPRI-UB’s Executive Director Dylan Vernon and Policy Analyst Devon Paulino, the Report provides the first comprehensive independent assessment of Belize’s status as one of the few countries in the world without any comprehensive legislation to regulate political parties or political finance. Despite over 30 years of civil society advocacy and repeated manifesto promises by both major political parties, every pledge to enact political finance regulation has been broken.

The Report illustrates that unregulated political financing is firewood to the flames of political corruption and rampant handout politics and is a primary cause of the marginalization of alternative political voices.

To break this regulation deadlock, the Report presents thirteen recommendations spanning constitutional amendments, a new stand-alone legislation, and a phased implementation process. This integrated regulation framework is designed to be bold yet practical for Belize’s context.

The Report concludes that “The time for regulation is now” and argues that the Belizean people deserve nothing less as part of the transformational process of improving their livelihoods and enhancing the quality of Belizean democracy.” Copies of the Report were presented to several social partner organisations at the Launch and will be presented to political leaders in the coming week.
