Alyssa Nurse remembers feeling a mix of trepidation and excitement as she stared out the window on a six-hour flight from Guyana to Toronto four years ago.

But she quickly overcame any nervousness and immersed herself in campus life at the University of Toronto, as evidenced by her awards and long list of community-centric extracurricular activities.

“I knew I wanted to be in a very diverse university and a diverse learning environment,” says Nurse, who majored in economics and political science in the Faculty of Arts & Science as a member of Victoria College.

Nurse was born in Barbados and grew up in Providence, Guyana, a community on the outskirts of the country’s capital, Georgetown.
